Baptisia is a deciduous North American native flower 3 to 4 feet tall, perfect for your perennial garden. The prized medium blue color is a great companion to other late spring-early summer perennials. When the flower spikes are spent, it forms a gray-green clump with attractive foliage and seed pods (which look great in dried arrangements), forming an interesting backdrop for other plants. Baptisia is a beneficial native plant, in that it fixes nitrogen in the soil, being in the pea (Fabaceae) family. It was prized by Native Americans and later settlers for a substitute for indigo dye, as well as for medicinal purposes. It has a taproot, making it difficult to transplant successfully, so find its permanent home when planting. This plant resents being disturbed when established. It is extremely hardy, low maintenance, drought tolerant when established and makes a good substitute in the south for lupines, which like cooler summers. Baptisia prefers full sun for best performance. One of my personal favorites, just gorgeous!
